Group #3 Metal and Mineral
Initially when trying to determine our metal and mineral we believed that conductivity, solubility, and whether or not the material would melt were going to be big factors to help us narrow down our choices. Most of our predictions were correct when we conducted the experiments. Once we went through the experiments conductivity and density were the biggest factors in determining our metal. With us knowing that our metal was a conductor we were able to narrow our options of materials down to seven different choices. The material Molybdenum was the only one that fit our observed density (10.55g/ml) and was also a conductor. Throughout our experiments when determining the mineral we felt solubilityand hardness were the most important factors in discovering what mineral our group had. We determined it was Gypsum due to the fact that our unknown material had the same score on the hardness scale as Gypsum. Also the material was insoluble which helped us narrow down our options. Finally, our unknown mineral had a similar appearance to that of Gypsum.
