Carbon dioxide emissions has the potential to lower pH which will therefore make oceans more acidic. Ocean acidification has always occurred, but based off of recent computer model trends the acidification process is occurring much more rapidly which will have a negative impact on coral reefs and ocean life. Ocean acidification has occurred more quickly post industrialization indicating that big industries are responsible for the change in pH from carbon emissions. The computer model that Caldeira and Wickett developed indicates that there will be a much more rapid increase in ocean acidification than what has been seen for millions of years. Ocean acidification is harmful and an important concept to understand because of the negative impact on ocean life. Coral reefs are ecosystems which offer shelter, food, and means of living for ocean creatures. With the decrease in pH, we are already seeing decreases in coral health and increases in coral bleeching such as in the Great Barrier Reef.
